The Coppell Lions Club 32nd Annual Pancake Breakfast was held Saturday, February 10th, in Smartt Hall at the First United Methodist Church in Coppell.  The event was a great success, with well over 600 tickets sold.  The breakfast featured pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and great coffee.  Lions handled the cooking, serving, clean up and hospitality, with help from the Coppell High School Leos.  The Leos are a high school based service club associated with the Lions.

The Carter Blood Bus was on hand to accept blood donations.  Carter BloodCare and the Coppell Lions have worked together on this blood drive for many years.  The Lions are delighted to help Carter stage the drive, especially during this unusually difficult flu season.

Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast go to fund Coppell Lions Club service projects, including their Holiday Food and Toy Drive, Scholarship Program, SPOT Vision Program, Pediatric Cancer Initiative and Diabetes Awareness Program.  The Coppell Lions also support the Texas Lions Camp, a summer camp for children with disabilities.

“I’d like to thank all of our sponsors for helping us raise money to fund these very worthwhile service projects,” said Dan Madden, Coppell Lions Club President.  “A special thanks to Frost Bank Coppell, our lead sponsor.  As Lions, we also greatly appreciate everyone here in the Coppell community who contributes to our fund raisers.  With your help, we are able to make a positive difference.”

Coppell Lions Holiday Food and Toy Drive

The Coppell Lions Club recently sponsored its annual food and toy drive.  The drive raised over 4 tons of food, bags of toys for almost 350 children, and many gift cards.  Now in its 31st year, the Holiday Food and Toy Drive is a partnership between the Coppell Lions Club, the Coppell Independent School District and RE/MAX DFW Associates.

The drive begins each year with the Coppell schools.  Coppell teachers, administrators and counselors take a leadership role in introducing the concept to the students, often as part of a project based learning initiative.  Coppell Lions visit with students in many of the schools to help kick off the drive.  The students take it from there, organizing the drive in a way that they believe will work best in their school, then encouraging fellow students to participate and donate.  This year 14 Coppell schools participated in the drive.

Coppell school nurse and counselors are also very helpful in helping to reach out to families that might benefit from the drive, so those families can contact the Lions if interested.

Once the schools complete their drives, the Lions stop by to pick up the proceeds.  Several schools have assemblies or presentations when the Lions arrive, so the students can see the results of their efforts.  The Lions consolidate all of the donated items, and sort the canned goods.  The Lions supplement the canned goods with turkeys, flour, sugar and potatoes for each family.

Real estate agents from RE/MAX DFW Associates then jump into action.  Led by Christine Glidewell, they organize the toys and provide gift cards where appropriate.  They also handle delivery, this year to 105 Coppell families.

“This is truly a community effort,” said Dan Madden, Coppell Lions Club President.  “We really appreciate our relationships with the Coppell schools and with RE/MAX.  We love working with them to help brighten the holidays for our neighbors.  We’d also like to thank our many sponsors, including Frost Bank, Robertson Pools and The Rich-Adams-Edwards Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors.”

On October 21, 2017, the Coppell Lions Club held their first free Diabetes Screening event at St. Luke Catholic Church in Irving, TX. The “Diabetes Awareness: Screen and Educate,” event was collaboratively provided by the Irving DFW Indian Lions Club and the Primary Care Clinic of North Texas.

The goal of the program was to diagnose pre-diabetes and diabetes for patients 18 years old and older, and offer additional medical information. A volunteer team of medical professionals provided various testing, such as the Hemoglobin A1C , a blood test that determines the average levels of  blood sugar or commonly called glucose over the last three months.  A value of 5.7 to 6.5 is categorized as “pre-diabetic”, whereas a value over 6.5 is considered “diabetic”.

The event included a Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP), which is a blood test that measures your sugar levels, electrolytes, as well as kidney and liver function. The medical team also administered free blood pressure readings, measurements of weight, height and body mass index, and complimentary Spot Vision Screening.

The program offered further education through a presentation as provided by Alicia Bell, a diabetes educator Methodist Charlton Medical Center, along with Angie Cruz, director at Methodist Health System and co-leader of the event. The presentation provided valuable tips regarding proper dietary adjustments. At the conclusion of the presentation, a lucky participant won a free iPad as a raffle prize.

“This Diabetes Screening event provided services that offer critical medical information and education. Measuring these health indicators provides a bigger picture in achieving a better quality of life”, said Jun Cruz, team leader of the Coppell Lion’s Club.

“With members of the Coppell Lions Club and volunteers from St Luke Catholic Church who assisted in making this event possible, everyone had a great time serving our community” said Coppell Lions Club President Dan Madden.
