Title: VP@C Learners Conclude Their Earth Day Celebration

VP@C Investigates Simple Changes for a Cleaner Planet

In celebration of Earth Day, VP@C Turning Point learners began a unit designed to create awareness of changes we can make as consumers to create a healthier living environment and healthier lives. Inspired by a field trip to the Coppell Nature Park and a series of learning experiences highlighting relevant environmental concerns, learners selected topics of interest and began investigations into the causes, effects and potential solutions for their topics.

Several weeks were spent researching and investigating and organizing information for presentations to fellow learners, school staff and a panel of CISD community members. The much anticipated day arrived and learners presented convincing arguments on changes we can make to lead healthier lives and create a healthier environment. The eventful day included presentation, demonstrations and infographic representations.

Topics included keeping microfibers out of our freshwater and marine ecosystems, simple homemade cleaners, herbicides and pesticides, sustainable food choices and the repurposing of typical throw away items. The top take-aways were simple recipes for a homemade dust spray as well as a pesticide and an herbicide.

VP@C Learners Begin Their Celebration of Earth Day Early

Victory Place @ Coppell Turning Point learners started their Earth Day celebration early this year with environmental videos, infographics and a trip to the Coppell Nature Park. Learners were ready to do their part for the Earth at the Coppell Nature Park where they participated in a trash pick up along the nature trails and on the grounds around the facility. Armed with bags, gloves, and trash pick up sticks, six groups of learners plus educators and nature center staff set out on a beautiful, temperature perfect day, to clean up the trails. After a very productive morning they returned with garbage bags filled with all sorts of items ranging from the ubiquitous plastic bags to bottles and drink containers. It was an amazing morning where learners exhibited the life principles of cooperation, responsibility and effort.

In the afternoon Turning Point learners were treated to an inspiring presentation by Alisa Koslowski on the green features of the Biodiversity Education Center. Learners were introduced to solar panels and the four inverters that help convert electricity from DC to AC to power the center. They experienced first hand the artificial wood made of of recycled jugs used as flooring for the expansive outdoor deck and felt the weight of the glued wood beams used in the construction of the center. Learners were introduced to other Green materials such as the carpet made from recycled plastics and the Nudura wall construction which provides excellent insulation for the building. Outside, learners viewed the roof of the center which is designed in a butterfly pattern to collect rainwater into an enormous cistern outside the center. Learners were amazed to see the cistern which holds 9400 gallons of water and it takes only one inch of rain on the roof to fill it a third of the way. The remainder of the day was spent testing the water quality of the stream running through the park and participating in the thought provoking Viewpoints on a Line Activity which gave learners a chance to express their opinions on various environmental issues facing us today.

Thank you Alisa Koslowski, Shannon Richardson, and Maura Breen for giving us the wonderful opportunity to start our Sustainability Unit with such an inspiring visit to the Biodiversity Education Center.

World Affairs Council Event with Stephen Biddle

Victory Place @ Coppell was well represented at the Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas where learners attended a World Affairs Council Event featuring Stephen Biddle. Learners were served in an elegant fashion by Crescent Court servers and had the opportunity to visit with guests of the WAC before the event.

Following the luncheon, WAC members, guests and our learners were attentive as Stephen Biddle addressed the Council’s 2017 International Perspective Series on the topic “U.S. Military Sales: Are We Getting Our Money’s Worth?”  Mr. Biddle is an Adjunct Senior Fellow for Defense Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations and he is a veteran analyst of American policies and decisions in military efforts. He expertly addressed the issue drawing from his vast knowledge and experience in the field of military spending and foreign policy.

Stephen Biddle is author of the 2005 book, “Military Power: Explaining Victory and Defeat in Modern Battle” and has won several prizes including the Council on Foreign Relations’ Author Ross Award Silver Medal for 2005 and the 2005 Huntington Prize from the Harvard University Olin Institute for Strategic Studies. He is currently a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University and has held positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Institute for Defense Analyses, Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and the Harvard Kennedy School’s Office of National Security Programs.

Mr. Biddle’s address was informative and timely as he discussed U.S. military involvement and the costs of that involvement in several arenas around the world. He assessed the outcomes of this involvement in terms of our mission. Our learners benefited greatly from the exposure and the experience and represented VP@C in a professional manner. The event was invaluable and enhanced our learner’s understanding of our global community and the global connections at play in our increasingly complex interdependent world.

The mission of the nonprofit, nonpartisan World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth is to promote international awareness, understanding and connections to enhance the region's global stature and to prepare North Texans to thrive in our complex world. Our learners and staff are already looking forward to our next event, In The White House, featuring George H. W. House in April!

VP@C Learners Begin Their Journey to Environmental Awareness

It was an amazing start to the school year as the Turning Point class from VP@C gave back to the community by volunteering at the Coppell Nature Park. Learners under the direction of Alisa Koslowski, Bruce Wilcox and Mike Martin worked tirelessly to maintain and augment the trails at the park. At any one instance on the morning of September 8th, the learners could be seen exhibiting the life principles of responsibility, diligence and cooperation as they worked together rotating jobs to get the mission accomplished. Learners shoveled mulch into wheelbarrows, pushed the wheelbarrows up and down the trails, and spent time making sure the mulch was distributed evenly so that visitors to the park can have an enjoyable experience.

After a quick cool down and lunch, learners participated in an inspiring presentation by Ms. Koslowski on BEC Green, the green features of the Biodiversity Education Center. The biodiversity center was built to LED standards using repurposed steel panels for the interior and exterior, as well as the restrooms. Learners were introduced to Green materials such as the carpet made from recycled plastics and the Nudura wall construction which provides excellent insulation for the building. Learners were able to view the roof which is designed in a butterfly pattern to collect rainwater into an enormous cistern outside the building. We also had the opportunity to learn about the 96 solar panels and view the  four inverters which help convert electricity from DC to AC to power the center.

The day ended with a viewpoints-on-line activity where learners debated their positions on various environmental topics and a stream test where learners tested the  quality of water in our own Cottonwood Creek.

Last but not least. the Turning Point learners completed another volunteer opportunity by setting up the BEC for a meeting of the Coppell Parks Department before boarding their bus for the trip back to VP@C.
