Jeremy Basso, #27, selected Player of the Game

The Coppell Boys Varsity Team (3-1-1) opened up district play this week with a hard fought 1-1 tie at Jesuit on Tuesday.  Both defenses were well organized throughout the game and Coppell and Jesuit played out a goalless first half with few chances at either end.  However, almost immediately after the re-start Coppell found the back of the net from Nick Taylor only to have the goal disallowed.  The Cowboys pressure finally paid off half way through the second half when Amit Verma put Coppell ahead 1-0 by scoring his first varsity goal.

Coppell had the better chances in the second half but Jesuit was always dangerous on the break.  It was a breakaway goal in the last few minutes of the game that gave Jesuit their game tying goal.

As the final seconds of the game expired Coppell scored what they hoped was the winning goal only to have it waved off for coming 1 second after the final whistle.

Jeremy Basso was named player of the game for his strong performance in defense.

Coppell Cowboys celebrate their Showcase win!

The Coppell Boys Varsity Team (3-0-0) started their 2017 campaign by winning the North Texas Elite Showcase tournament.  The reigning 6A state champions started the tournament with a tough win against local rivals Lewisville (score 2-1), then followed that up by dominating Abilene (score 5-0) in the semi-finals, and finally secured their first championship of the year with a statement-making win against El Paso Socorro (score 4-1).

For the three games, Wyatt Priest led all scorers with 4 goals, while both Nick Taylor and Alex Haas each found the back of the net 3 times.

The Cowboys have no games scheduled this week, but will spend the week getting ready for a tough trip to unbeaten McKinney Boyd (2-0-1) on January 17th.

Goal scorer Nick Taylor drives the ball downfield against Plano West.

Over the New Year period the defending Coppell HS boys’ varsity soccer team started the season and the defense of their state championship with scrimmages against Grand Prairie, Sam Houston, and Plano West.

Coppell started with a goalless tie with Grand Prairie, then dominated Sam Houston 5-0, and then beat a very strong Plano West team 3-0.

Coppell dominated the scrimmage against Plano West throughout. Nick Taylor opened the scoring early in the first half, Wyatt Priest added a second goal shortly afterwards, and Amit Verma completed the scoring half way through the second period.

A huge bright spot for the Cowboys was the play of the defense -- they did not give up a goal through all three scrimmages and the defense promises to be one of the strengths of the team as they look to defend their state championship.

Coppell’s next action will come this weekend (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) as Coppell hosts some of the top soccer teams in the area for their annual North Texas Showcase.  Their first game will be against Lewisville on Thursday, January 4, at 1pm.
