Keep Coppell Beautiful (KCB), an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is a committee that organizes opportunities to preserve and beautify our community through waste reduction, litter prevention, beautification, and environmental stewardship. KCB is excited to announce that registration for the KCB Teen committee is open to teens, ages 14-17.

The KCB Teen committee requires a five-month commitment from the teens, January through May. During this time, the students will volunteer their time for nature-based education projects and outreach throughout Coppell.

Share your passion for the environment and discover a new way to earn service hours while giving back to your community. This is a great experience to showcase on your resume.

Are you passionate about conserving the natural environment? Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge about the natural world while having fun with students? Consider becoming a volunteer Docent for the Biodiversity Education Center at Coppell Nature Park. BEC Docents are a committed group of volunteers who receive additional training to take a leadership role in education programs such as field trips and guided hikes. Docents are a vital component of the quality programming BEC offers to the community.  Docent training qualifies a volunteer to independently facilitate education activities such as games, interactive lessons and nature walks. The training provides:  

  • an overview of field trip logistics and learning activities 

  • safety protocol  

  • a field trip simulation provides examples of actives and an introduction to the facilitator experience 

Docent training is offered two times each year in the Spring and Fall. Please join us for the next scheduled training on Saturday, September 7th, from 3:00pm-5:00pm. Come dressed for outdoor activities.

The Biodiversity Education Center (BEC) is preparing for the 3rd Annual Fall Frolic event, Saturday, October 5, 11:00am-1:30pm, which celebrates nature with free hands-on activities and live music along the trail system at Coppell Nature Park. The mile-long nature walk will have eight hands-on activity stations for young explorers.

This year’s theme is “I Spy”. Fall Frolickers will have the opportunity to explore the park from an animal’s point of view. Visit each station to experience the far-sighted vision of birds of prey, learn how bats “see” at night, discover the faceted eyesight of insects and more. Families, Scout troops and nature-lovers alike will also be welcomed to help seed the Blackland Prairie and celebrate Arbor Day in the outdoor classroom.

Since 2019 marks the 5th birthday of the Biodiversity Education Center and the 15th birthday of Coppell Nature Park the BEC will teaming up with the Friends of Coppell Nature Park to throw an extra big party! Enjoy live music, face-painting and lots of giveaways at this exciting fall event in the trees. Nature-themed treats and giveaways available while supplies last!

The Biodiversity Education Center would like to announce that registration for the 2019-2020 session of Junior Master Naturalist is now open! This program is open to children in grades 4th – 6th and begins September 2019. Through exciting hands-on explorations and outdoor adventures, youth participants will gain the skills and knowledge to become a steward of the environment. Once the participants have completed the program, they will have the opportunity to help train future Junior Master Naturalists by becoming volunteers themselves.

The Junior Master Naturalist program includes seven courses that introduce different aspects of the natural environment. Each course consists of one classroom lesson followed by a field trip practicum. Classes take place at the Biodiversity Education Center, where students explore foundational concepts through engaging activities. Each Field trip is hosted at various conservation sites throughout North Texas. These practicums give students the opportunity to apply the concepts they learned in class, develop skills, and experience wildlife first-hand.

This past January we saw the beginning of a new student-led committee for Keep Coppell Beautiful; Keep Coppell Beautiful Teens.

The KCB Teen committee requires a five-month commitment from the teens. During that time, the students volunteer their time for nature-based education projects and outreach throughout Coppell. This inaugural group of teens hosted a variety of educational programs and beautification projects during the past five months including a bird-themed Wild Day at the Biodiversity Education Center, cleaning up Coppell Nature Park and Andrew Brown East Park, and hosting an outreach booth about honey bees at the Coppell Farmers Market. This first phase of young leaders should be very proud of all that they accomplished and how high they set the bar future groups of KCB Teens.

The Biodiversity Education Center (BEC) wants to invite teens, ages 14-17, to apply for the fall session of KCB Teens. Share your passion for the environment and discover a new way to earn service hours while giving back to your community. This twice a month commitment runs August through December and is a great experience to showcase on your resume.

Saving FROM a Rainy Day; DIY Rain Barrel Class

This class is a barrel of fun! Rainwater is the best water for your lawn, landscape or vegetable garden; Divert it, Save it, Use it! Come learn the basics and benefits of rainwater harvesting and reduce the effect your stormwater has on the environment. Participants will learn how to collect and utilize rainwater at home. This class is hands on “DIY” where each participant will build and take home a 55-gallon rain barrel at $50 dollars each. Rain barrels are recycled food-grade containers and are roughly 24” wide by 36” tall.  Pre-registration is required.


This class will be held at the Biodiversity Education Center, 367 Freeport Parkway Coppell, Texas 75019, on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Coppell will have its first ever "Open Garden Day" on September 30, 9:00am-1:00pm. Eight gardens will welcome visitors, some that have not been on a tour before, others popular past participants in tours such as the Smartscape tour and the Dallas WaterWise tour.  This tour, however, unlike tours of the past, did not limit participation by criterion; it was open to whoever wanted to share their outdoor creative endeavors with the public. 

Three gardens have design elements provided by Coppell's own Grow It Land Design, two have been featured in the Dallas Morning News, another was inspired by Monet's gardens in Giverny. All provide the opportunity to enjoy an array of styles, structure, and plants that can inform your choices now and in the future. Fall is the best time to plant perennials, trees, and shrubs because the plant's energy goes into root growth while it is otherwise dormant in the winter.  This tour may provide your own inspiration, allowing you to give it the optimum opportunity to flourish in the spring!

Maps will be available at Helping Hands Community Garden at Town Center, 255 Parkway Blvd., on the day of the tour, or on the website, coppelltx.gov/kcb, beginning September 25.

Nominate Coppell to Get a Grant for Nature ‘Play and Learn’ Area


Coppell is in the running for a $20,000 ‘Meet Me at the Park’ grant that would fund a play space designed to facilitate learning about nature. The Nature Explore design would provide a space for kids to play on a playground that utilizes natural elements like trees and water. It will be positioned just between the Biodiversity Education Center and the trailhead of the Coppell Nature Park, making hikes and more info on nature programs readily available to the families that will be adventuring there.

Nature Explore recognizes a need for today’s kids to break away from screens and reconnect to nature. They use research-based outdoor classroom features developed by teachers to engage kids through play. The stations typically include a nature art area and community stage as well as incorporating physical activities like climbing, building, and gardening. Coppell’s plans will provide sensory learning experiences such as outdoor art easels, a water manipulation station, and a music and movement area - offering a local opportunity for kids that learn different.

The natural play and learn area will be free and open to the public. It is likely to be utilized by the youth groups that visit the Biodiversity Education Center, but is intended to provide a unique and kid-friendly area for families to meet up and enjoy the outdoors.

Please support this community project by nominating Coppell daily through the month of April.  Here's how:
