While children come into the world ready to decode sounds and words, music education helps enhance those natural abilities. Growing up in a musically rich environment is often advantageous for children’s language development. According to Nina Kraus, director of Northwestern’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory, researchers found that after two years, children who regularly attend music classes are actively participating in class. They also found that these children show larger improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading skills than less-involved peers.

Music targets one specific area of the brain to stimulate the use of spatial-temporal reasoning, which is useful in mathematical thinking. Research has found that there is a causal link between music and spatial intelligence, which means that understanding music can help children visualize various elements that should go together, like they would do when solving a math problem. Furthermore, according to the Center of the Developing Child at Harvard University, this involves the mental processes that allow the brain to plan, focus attention, remember instruction and successfully juggle multiple tasks.

Children very quickly learn that music lessons require them to access many of their senses. They have to listen, they have to touch (if they are playing any instrument), they have to read and often doing all these simultaneously. This requires a certain amount of discipline and confidence and both improve as the student progresses through their classes. This improvement in confidence is not just related to music, but it affects their overall confidence in opening up to new challenges in school and other extra curricular activities.
