Troop 840 enjoying summer camps and monthly campouts
Spring is just around the corner and Boy Scout Troop 840 is holding their annual Mulch Sale.  As in previous years, the troop is selling premium quality Texas-sourced products from Living Earth Technology, with four different types of mulch available:  hardwood, cedar, red-colored and black-colored.

The mulch comes in two-cubic foot bags and is competitively priced at $5.00 per bag, which includes free delivery by the scouts within the Coppell and Valley Ranch area.  Scouts will also spread the mulch at the customer's request for only an additional $2.50 per bag.  Delivery and spreading of the mulch is expected to take place the weekend of February 29 - March 1, 2020.

Proceeds from the sale help individual scouts earn their own way to summer camp and monthly campouts, as well as fund Eagle projects.

To purchase mulch, contact any Troop 840 scout or send an email to mulch@troop840.org by Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

Troop 840 adult volunteers preparing the chili supper and Troop 840 Scouts serving the attendees
Boy Scout Troop 840 will host its 26th annual "All You Can Stand" Chili Supper on Saturday, December 7th, 5p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Coppell Middle School North cafeteria, located at 120 Natches Trace in Coppell.   Tickets are still $8 for the all-you-can-eat dinner, which includes beef or vegetarian chili, hot dogs, baked potatoes, and all the fixings!

Additionally, chili may be purchased by the quart for $12. To purchase tickets or quarts, please contact a Troop 840 member or email: chilisupper@troop840.org. Tickets may be purchased at the door; however, advance purchase of tickets will ensure that the Troop will have enough chili and will also help scouts reach their chili-selling goal.  Advance purchase for quarts is also encouraged and they will be available for pick up on December 7, 2018, at the supper.

As always, proceeds from the chili supper will be used to purchase camping gear; including tents, chairs, knives, hydration packs, sleeping bags, lanterns, and more, for the annual Scout Buck Auction held in May.  Scouts must sell a predetermined minimum amount of chili tickets to be eligible to participate in the auction, using "scout bucks" that they have earned throughout the year by attending meetings and campouts, advancing in rank, earning merit badges, holding leadership positions, participating in the KnotMaster program, and other activities.

While the adults take care of the cooking, the Scouts take care of setting up, serving, and the clean up afterwards.  It's a Troop Tradition and the Scouts are happy to share it with our community.  Come out and enjoy dinner for a great cause before heading out to the City of Coppell’s Holiday Tree Lighting being held the same evening at Andrew Brown Park East.  What a wonderful way to kick-off the holidays!

Boy Scout Troop 840 held its summer Court of Honor on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at Church of the Apostles in Coppell.  The Court of Honor is held tri-annually to recognize the hard work and achievements of the scout members in the troop.

Fifty-three scouts were recognized for advancing in rank, with 20 scouts achieving the rank of Scout, 7 achieving the rank of Tenderfoot, four achieving the rank of 2nd Class, three achieving the rank of 1st Class, 8 achieving the rank of Star, and 8 achieving the rank of Life.  Some of these scouts will go on to earn the Eagle Scout rank; and three scouts were recognized for accomplishing this rank.  This Court of Honor was particularly special because the Troop participated in presenting the Eagle Oath and a Bronze Palm to Anuj Parikh.  Eagle Palms are bronze, gold and silver awards presented to young men who earn five, 10, 15 or more merit badges beyond the 21 required to become an Eagle Scout.  Troop 840 also takes great pride in presenting its Eagle Scouts with a hand decorated Eagle scarf and handmade Eagle slide; a tradition held since the Troop was established in 1987.

In addition to ranking up, scouts were also recognized for their hard work in earning merit badges.  Seventy-one scouts earned a total of 346 merit badges, many of these earned while at summer camp at Camp Constantin near Graford, Texas, Camp Cris Dobbins, in Elbert County, Colorado, and at Camp H. Roe Bartle in Missouri.  Troop 840 also participated in three High Adventure camps this summer; Northern Tier trek through Ontario, Canada down into Northern Minnesota, SeaBase Sailing in Key Largo, Florida, and Philmont backpacking trek with over 50-miles hiked.  Scouts who participated in these camps spoke on the experiences they had, the camaraderie they shared, and the sheer joy of the time spent on these campouts.  The Troop 840 mulch sales and spreading held in early spring each year, the year-round Flag program through the Rotary Club, and any popcorn sales or camp cards sales made by the scouts contribute to their accounts to help fund their participation in these awesome adventures, summer camps, and the local, monthly campouts.

Merit badges are earned to meet requirements for rank advancements, but scouts also learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as they earn these. There are more than 135 different merit badges that can be earned and give scouts an opportunity to learn about and participate in areas they may normally not have any exposure to through school or in their day- to-day lives.

Special awards are also given during the Court of Honor.  This Court of Honor included awards for the honor camper programs, Order of the Arrow and Mic-O-Say.   Troop 840 was honored to have four Braves named, and three Warriors with the Tribe of Mic-O-Say at Camp Bartle.  Ten Scouts also completed their Ordeal with the Order of the Arrow, and three earned their Brotherhood within the Order of the Arrow.  Additional special awards for participation in NOVA, Snorkeling, Mile Swim, 50-Miler, 75-Miler, and National Youth Leadership, National Youth Leadership Training, and Trainer’s Edge were also acknowledged.  Lastly, scout Sean Nelson was recognized for his Triple Crown.  He has the distinction of participating in three High Adventure trips, Philmont, Sea Base, and Northern Tier.   He happily detailed his experiences to the Troop and encouraged all of the scouts to participate in as many as possible.

Following the awards program, scouts and parents were treated to an Ice Cream Social in the church's Fellowship Hall.

BSA Troop 840, which is led by Scoutmaster Craig Warner and Senior Patrol Leader elect Jared Morse, meets weekly at the Church of the Apostles, 322 S. MacArthur Blvd., Coppell, TX.  The Troop currently consists of 147 scouts, with 33 of those scouts being newly crossed over members.

Troop 840 Boy Scout, Zach Ebert, and CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village-Coppell Director, Mr. Mitchell George

In May 2019, Troop 840 presented two scout-led Eagle Projects in service to the Coppell community.

First, Noah Morse, with the assistance of other Troop 840 scouts, built and installed a “Flag Retirement Drop Box” located in the parking lot of MacArthur Park at 400 S. MacArthur Blvd., Coppell, TX 75019, behind the Church of the Apostles, and in between the baseball fields and dog park.

The United States Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”  The box is designed to provide easy and respectful disposal of worn or frayed or “retired” U.S. or State flags.  We encourage the community to feel free to use it for this distinguished purpose and rest assured the flags will be disposed of in accordance with The United States Flag Code.

Second, Zach Ebert designed four raised garden beds for CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village-Coppell.  Zach Ebert chose to complete his eagle service project at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village because two of his grandparents are residents.  The construction of the garden beds was accomplished by Zach, also with the assistance of fellow Troop 840 scouts, in March 2019.  On Thursday, May 30, 2019, the residents and director of CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village-Coppell officially dedicated their new raised garden, which has been planted with various herbs for use by the kitchen staff.  Space remains for the residents of CHRISTUS St. Joseph Village to add additional plants and flowers.  During the dedication ceremony, the Director, Mr. Mitchell George, commented that the Scouts had done such a great job putting the raised beds together; he had no doubt they could withstand any severe weather, including tornadoes.

Troop 840 is honored to be a part of the Coppell community and will continue to do their part to keep Coppell the “Best Place to Live in Texas”.

BSA Troop 840 meets on Tuesday evenings at the Church of the Apostles, 322 S. MacArthur Blvd, Coppell, TX, and is led by Scoutmaster Craig Warner and Senior Patrol Leader, Manjul Raj.
