If you are thinking of choosing a taekwondo school or other martial arts school, you’ll have a number of things to think about. You’ll have many choices to make so be prepared to ask questions. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and teaches self-defense. Physical fitness is a pre-requisite for self-defense. A complete taekwondo curriculum includes: philosophy, meditation, basics, forms, self-defense, sparring, breaking, stretching, leadership skills and fitness.

Taekwondo America (TA) is a national organization with member schools located across the United States and the nation’s leader in martial arts education. All the schools adhere to the same principles, standards, and procedures that guide the curriculum the schools teach, the way they teach, the rank requirements, and the way the schools and their students project their image and reputation within the community.

The Taekwondo America National Board of Examiners developed and certified a comprehensive training and fitness curriculum for instructors and students to follow. This enables children and adults to progress at their own pace and ensures that Taekwondo America schools are able to meet the needs of all students.

Over the years, Taekwondo America has built a reputation based upon its maintenance of a high standard of excellence. The organization has strict training and promotion standards and does not allow any negative, aggressive behavior or any misuse of taekwondo in any manner. All Taekwondo America instructors are certified by the Taekwondo America National Board of Examiners through a rigorous training and testing process. Instructors must maintain their teaching skills and be recertified every three years to retain their teaching credentials.

The Taekwondo America program is especially strong in the area of children. The structured classes, discipline, and respect that are reinforced each day give younger students tools that they may use throughout their lives, regardless of their technical skill or physical abilities. The children's program has produced positive results, such as longer attention spans, greater focus, increased respect for others, improved physical fitness, and general behavioral improvement.

Coppell Taekwondo America is a member school of Taekwondo America and Kevin Nevels, owner and chief instructor, shared some important and frequently asked questions:

What is the difference between karate and taekwondo?
Taekwondo is the Korean version of karate. The techniques are very similar. Most “karate” schools in the U.S. are actually teaching taekwondo.

Who can do taekwondo?
Just about anyone can participate in taekwondo — children, teens, and adults. You don’t need to get in shape first or have a background in martial arts to start. It’s a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting any new exercise or workout program.

Am I too old to start taekwondo?
Probably not, in fact taekwondo can help you feel years younger. We work on the very things that health professionals recommend to fight aging: flexibility, strength, and aerobic conditioning. We work with each student at their own pace so that you will never feel overwhelmed.

My child is not good at other sports or not athletic. Can he/she be good at taekwondo?
Definitely. Many children choose taekwondo because it is a great activity for children who are not competitive in team sports. We teach each child at his/her own pace and they are not measured against each other. There is no “second string” or “alternate” players and no one sits on the bench.

My child is in baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. Can he take taekwondo classes too?
Yes, many of our students are here to enhance their training for team sports. Most sports require excellent focus, agility, balance, and coordination, but they don’t adequately teach these skills during team practice. We teach these skills on a level that they will never get in their team practice. If you make taekwondo your children’s core activity, they will have a serious advantage over other players. Our flexible schedule allows the athlete to train around his team’s practice schedule.

Will participating in taekwondo teach my child to become more violent?
We typically find the opposite to be true, for a number of reasons. Our goal for Taekwondo America students include:

  • Improving self-discipline to help them make better choices and try to avoid conflicts
  • Developing the self-control to resolve problems as peacefully as possible
  • Increasing their self-confidence
  • Understanding and living the values of the Tenets of Taekwondo and the Student Oath

Can my child learn how to defend himself against bullies?
Yes, your child will learn effective self defense skills. More importantly, we will teach your child how to avoid physical conflicts and give him/her the confidence that makes him/her an undesirable target of bullies.

What are the benefits of becoming a taekwondo student?
Taekwondo can help students academically by teaching them to be focused and more self-disciplined, as well as helping them develop the positive character traits to become strong leaders. For all students workouts can also help with aerobic/cardio and strength training, weight control, difficulty sleeping, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.

It's that time of year again and as cooler weather approaches it's important to keep your house warm while being mindful of efficiency and money saving tips. There are several inexpensive things everyone can do to protect your home against the cold.

  • One easy first step is to keep your furnace air filter clean. A dirty or clogged filter can make your furnace work harder, which costs you more.
  • Don't let your heat escape! Make sure all your outside doors and windows are shut tightly. Check for leaks, and replace old weather stripping or caulk.
  • Use your window shades and drapes to maximize heating benefits. Keep shades closed at night to conserve heat. During the day, open shades to let the sunlight in.
  • Much of the heat that escapes your home is lost through the attic. Be sure to close off any attic vents or fans during the winter and check how well the attic is insulated.
  • Add humidity. Humid air feels warmer than dry air. Increasing the humidity of your home also helps you resist winter colds and moisturizes dry skin. A humidifier is simply a device that puts water vapor into a home’s air. Depending upon its water-output capacity, it may serve a single room or the entire house.
  • Set your thermostat to an on-average comfortable 68-70 degrees during the day and lower the thermostat 5-10 degrees at night or when leaving home for an extended time, it will help you save on energy and heating costs.

If your heating system isn’t producing enough heat, or no heat at all, or making a strange noise, it’s time to call a heating repairman. Sometimes the problem can be as simple as changing the air filter or there may be a more complex issue like the fan motor or the pilot light. The best way to avoid costly heating repairs is to schedule an annual maintenance visit with a heating/AC technician. They will inspect your unit and address any maintenance issues before they become major problems.

Most auto repair and service shops suggest an annual fall checkup for vehicles just prior to the cooler and rainy months ahead. Following your car's recommended maintenance schedule helps ensure your vehicle operates safely and uses fuel more efficiently. Here are some important tips to keep your car in shape and on the road:

Icy Roads: Keep a coffee can full of cat litter in the trunk during winter months. Sprinkling it over icy patches can supply the traction you need to get rolling when you are stuck.

Battery: Your vehicle’s battery loses 33% of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50% of its power when the temperature falls below zero. When temperatures become colder, turning over an engine can take up to twice as much current as needed under more favorable conditions and low temperatures can significantly decrease battery output. Use a battery charger to maintain charge levels and keep the battery fully charged during the winter months.

Fuel Pump Life: Avoid letting your fuel go below the 1/4 mark. If so, you run the risk of damaging your fuel pump faster. This is cause by the residue left at the bottom of the tank. It will clog the pump, not allowing fuel to go into the vehicle system.

Oil Check: Black or brown drips on the driveway means your car is leaking engine oil. Red drips indicate a transmission fluid leak and green or pale yellow fluids indicate a coolant leak. If you notice signs of fluid leakage, get your car inspected asap.

Brakes: When driving a vehicle equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS), don’t pump the brake when stopping. Pumping the pedal does not allow the ABS to properly engage. Instead, hold the pedal firmly down without letting up and let the ABS keep the wheel from locking up as the vehicle slows.

Windshield: Get small chips and cracks in your windshield fixed before they grow and ruin the glass. Chip repair is quick, restores the windshield's structural integrity and does not adversely affect visibility. Insurance companies often cover this cost.

What can I do if my car overheats?
If you are driving at normal highway speed and the vehicle starts to overheat, turn off the air conditioner, turn on the heater and immediately pull over to the shoulder. Odds are if the vehicle starts to overheat at highway speed, there is a problem in the cooling system such as low coolant, a clogged radiator or a broken drive belt or burst hose. Once at the shoulder, shut off the engine, open the hood and let the engine cool down — 20 minutes minimum. Once any overboiling stops and the engine has cooled, look for obvious signs of trouble. Do not attempt to open the radiator cap unless the engine is off and the top of the radiator is cold. If there is no noticeable problem such as a broken drive belt or burst hose, you can then add a coolant/water mixture to the radiator or overflow reservoir, start the vehicle and drive slowly to a service facility.

What’s the correct tire pressure for my vehicle?
The correct tire pressure for a vehicle is determined by the size and weight of the vehicle, the type of tires it uses, load hauled, and the type of driving the vehicle is intended for. The vehicle manufacturer places a tire inflation placard in each vehicle that gives the proper tire inflation pressures for that vehicle. This placard is located on the inside of the glove box door, inside the fuel-filler door, or on the driver’s side doorpost (depending upon manufacturer). Most manufacturers also list tire inflation levels in the owner’s manual.

How often should I change my wiper blades?
For vehicles that are parked inside, car care experts recommend that the wiper blades be replaced at least once a year or when the wiper blades start streaking — which ever comes first. On vehicles kept outside or in areas where the wipers receive excessive use, changing the blades two or even three times a year is recommended for clear vision.
