CHS sophomore Kaylee Minton rehearses for Coppell’s upcoming winter guard show.

The Coppell High School Color Guard has been very busy this spring. They have taken their show, “Within These Walls”, to multiple competition venues, most recently competing in the North Texas Colorguard Association Guard Contest at Flower Mound High School on March 21st, where they placed 3rd in the National A division. “Because we performed so well at the national conference in Austin, the local circuit bumped us up from the Scholastic A class to the National A class,” explained Daylen Rivera, CHS Head Color Guard Director. “Now we are performing with the highest ranked varsity teams in our area. It was nice to be in a higher level and still medal at the NTCA Guard Contest in Flower Mound.”

Prior to the Flower Mound performance, Coppell competed in the Winter Guard International Southwestern CG Championship on March 14th at the University of North Texas Coliseum in Denton, where they scored high in the preliminary round but fell just shy of the finals cutoff. “Our girls have come so far,” said Rivera. “They are such a young group and for many, this is their first time to compete on a winter guard floor. Plus, in Denton the girls were competing against the top schools across the Southwest. It’s great to see their hard work pay off.”

The show, “Within These Walls”, is choreographed to music by Liz Longley and it is about reminiscing about childhood memories. “This is my second year of color guard,” said Alexandria-Elizabeth Eason, sophomore squad member. “I have had a lot of fun. The work has been challenging but Mr. Rivera has been very patient with us. I feel like we are going to go places. We have so much potential.”

The Coppell Color Guard heads next to the North Texas Colorguard Assocation A/IW Championships, Guard National A Class, on April 11, 2015 at Birdville High School, Thomas Coliseum, located at 6108 Broadway Ave, Fort Worth, Texas 76117.
