Coppell 2018 NXR South team photographer: Melissa Evans

The top 21 Coppell runners from both the Girls’ and Boys’ teams came together for one last team run at Nike Cross Regional South on Saturday, November 17.  Many of the best cross country teams in AR, OK, LA, MS, and TX met up at NXR South to compete on the 5K course at Bear Branch Park in The Woodlands for the right to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, OR.  

The Girls finished 4th overall in the Girls Championship a field made up of 23 teams and 190 competitors.  Chloe Hassman led the girls she finished 24th overall with a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds.  Rowan Hassman (33rd, 19:40.9), Maddie Hulcy (52nd, 20:10.5), Natalie Fleming (64th, 20:17.2), Shelby Spoor (94th, 20:42.6), Rebecca Centeno, and Morgan Colon competed in the Girls Championship race.  Competition between the top four 6A teams in the state of Texas has been intense all season, NXR South top two team qualifying spots went to Prosper and Flower Mound. 

The Boys competed in three of the five Boys Open races.  Evan Caswell placed 2nd overall in the Boys Open division with a time of 16 minutes, 23.9 seconds.  Coppell Boys B team finished 6th overall in the Open Boys division, a field of 101 teams and 908 competitors.  Sophomore Colin Proctor led the cowboys B team, he finished 65th with a time of 17 minutes, 14.3 seconds.  Andrew Thompson (67th, 17:14.8), Riley Warner (85th, 17:22.3), Chris Figueroa (94th, 17:25), Santiago Escalante (101st, 17:27), Andrew Nester, and Justin Chow competed for Coppell B team.

Coppell girls placed 4th overall in the Rising Star race, a field of 130 sophomore and freshman competitors.  Coppell was led by Freshmen Grace Turman, she finished 9th overall with a time of 20 minutes and 35 seconds.  Dia Altura (14th, 20:53), Issabelle Ortizoga (21st, 21:01), Bernice David, Reezon Eke, Daniela Chavarria, and Elizabeth Miller competed for Coppell C team.

Coppell Girls B team placed 14th overall in the Girls’ Open division, a field of 62 teams and 577 competitors.  Junior Taylor Peltier led the cowgirls B team, she finished 65th overall with a time of 20 minutes, 59.9 seconds.  Avery Hancock (88th, 21:22), Jimena Benavides (133rd, 21:43), Catherine Kimball, Sarah Mobley, Catherine McKethan, and Paola Hernandez competed on the Coppell B team.    

The Coppell Boys A team placed 13th overall in the Boys Open division, a field of 908 competitors and 101 teams.  The A team was led by Sophomore Evan Caswell.  Evan placed 2nd overall in a time of 16 minutes, 23.9 seconds.  Nathaniel Leach (83rd, 17:22.1), Rith Bhattacharyya (151st, 17:39), Jackson Walker, Garrett Freddo, Grant Evans, and Kazimir Carlsen-Phelan competed on the Coppell A team. 

The Coppell Boys C team placed 39th overall in the Boys Open division.  The Coppell C team was led by Junior Parker Hicks, he finished 218th with a time of 17 minutes, 55.3 seconds.  William Heatherington (259th, 18:05), Tomas Olivas (370th, 18:29), Andrew Scrivner, Tyler Sewell, Diego Acosta, and Ishraj Bhandari competed on the Coppell C team.

Head Coach Nick Benton is thankful to have the privilege of leading the Coppell Cross Country team.  “I am proud of the progress we have made this year,” said Benton.  “The Nike meet is a great way to cap off the season.”  The NXR South marks the conclusion to the Coppell Cross Country season.  The Coppell distance runners will go into off season for the rest of 2018.  Training will ramp up in January to prepare for the 2019 Track season.
