District 6-6A Cross Country Is the Strongest in the State

The Coppell Cross Country team competed in the District 6-6A Championship on the 5K course at North Lakes Park in Denton on Friday, October 12.  Head Coach Nick Benton is proud of the way the team competed.  “This is the strongest district in the state and to have all of our teams but one in the top two was an accomplishment,” said Benton.    

The Varsity Girls’ team placed 2nd overall, just missing out on a 1st place finish by four points.  The girls did a fabulous job running together, Flower Mound will be very aware of the Cowgirls at the Region Championship. Junior Shelby Spoor led Coppell, she finished 4th overall with a time of 18 minutes, 49:58 seconds.  Chloe Hassman (6th, 19:06.3), Maddie Hulcy (7th, 19:07), Natalie Fleming (10th, 19:17.6), Morgan Colon (11th, 19:19.5), Rowan Hassman (12th, 19:20.7), and Rebecca Centeno (17th, 19:45.9) competed in the Varsity race.

The Varsity Boys’ team took 4th place overall, narrowly missing a team qualifying spot to move onto the Region Championship.  Sophomore Evan Caswell led the cowboys, he finished 5th overall with a time of 15 minutes, 54.6 seconds.  Nathaniel Leach (12th, 16:17.6), Jackson Walker (17th, 16:26.2), Marcos Bohn (18th, 16:34.3), Grant Evans (22nd, 16:40.1), Garret Freddo (25th, 16:45.9), and Justin Chow (28th, 17:04.8) represented Coppell in the Varsity race.

The JV Girls’ team came away with the District 6-6A title for JV Girls’; this is very exciting for the future!  Freshman Grace Turman led the girls, she finished 1st overall with a time of 20 minutes 17 seconds. Isabella Iseley (4th, 20:35), Dia Atluri (5th, 20:39), Taylor Peltier (6th, 20:40), and Catherine Kimball (9th, 20:48) scored for Coppell this week. 

Coppell placed 2nd overall in the JV Boys division.  Sophomore Rith Bhattacharyya led the boys, he finished 4th overall in a time of 16 minutes 52 seconds.  Colin Proctor (7th, 16:55), Andrew Thompson (8th, 17:05), Kaz Carlson-Phelan (12th, 17:13), and Santiago Escalante (15th, 17:28) made up the point scorers for Coppell.

The Girls Varsity team qualified as a team to move onto the Region 1-6A Championship.  On the Boys’ side, Evan Caswell is an individual qualifier for the Region 1-6A Championship.  The Region 1-6A Championship will take place on Monday, October 22 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
