New to the UIL Track and Field Championship Series for 2013 is the “Area” Meet.In the past, qualifying athletes advanced from District directly to Region, and then to State. As of this year, athletes must advance from District to Area, then to Region and State.

On April 18 & 19, qualifiers from Districts 3 and 4 came together to compete as Area 2, and qualifiers from Districts 5 and 6 did the same as Area 3. All the action took place at the Coppell High School Track at Buddy Echols Field in Coppell. The athletes in each Area were competing for the top four spots in each event, which would earn them the opportunity to advance to the 5A-Region 1 meet to be held at Texas Tech’s Fuller Track in Lubbock, TX on April 27 & 28.

After two days of grueling competition, The Coppell Cowgirls took Third Place in 5A-Area 3, and will send nine athletes to the Region meet. The Cowgirls’ 4x400m Relay team of Leah Yates, Chiamaka Ukoha, Sierra Andres and Bailey Bedichek ran their race in 3:58.04to win First Place and be named Area Champions. Sarah Agnew took Second Place Silver, clearing 11-06.00 in the Pole Vault event. Third Place Bronze went to Andres running the 400m in 58.28, Ukoha marking 35-06.50 in Triple Jump, and Cassidy Pickrell clearing 5-02.00 in the High Jump. Also, crossing the finish line in 1:43.41 for Third Place was the 4x200m Relay team of Bedichek, Ukoha, Marian McRae and Adaiwu Nwaiwu. Qualifying in Fourth Place with a time of 49.24 was the 4x100m Relay team of Andres, Nwaiwu, Kate Rohrbough and Ukoha.

The Cowboys Varsity team came up with a Third Place finish for the team, and six Area qualifiers. Troy Parker was Area Champion in both 110m Hurdles (15.02), and 300m Hurdles (39.35). Chibuzor Osuji took Second Place Silver in 110m Hurdles with a time of 15.11, as did Marcus Mitchell with a Triple Jump of 44-03.25, and Carson Vickroy with a 3200m Run in 9:35.67. Good Luck to Coppell’s 15 qualifying athletes who will travel to Lubbock next week for the 2013 5A-Region 1 meet. The top two athletes in each event at Region will then advance to the 5A State meet to be held in Austin on May 10 & 11.
