First graders at Pinkerton had their last unit of the year:  “How We Organize Ourselves”.  During this unit we discussed needs, wants, goods, services, plants, soil, etc.

We had local friends come in (Zenzero Bakery, Texas Creative Arts Academy, Coppell Firemen) to discuss if their jobs were goods or services and what they did. We combined this social studies unit with a science unit and covered plants as well. We had a representative from the Coppell Farmers Market come in and talk to us about these goods and services.

At Pinkerton we have a garden, The Pinkerton Patch. To culminate our unit, we put on our own farmers market with the vegetables we grew in the garden. The students went to the garden to harvest. They cleaned, trimmed, weighed and bagged all of our produce. We then priced it and made signs to advertise. It was a huge success and we sold out of our fresh produce very quickly!
