Fred Conger, immediate Past President of the Coppell Lions Club, was named one of two District Lions of The Year on Saturday, May 11 at the Wyndham Hotel in Dallas. The District 2-X1 Governor, Ken Gleason, presented the honor at the annual banquet.

Mr. Conger accepted the award for his tireless volunteer efforts in both his local Lions Club in Coppell as well as the 2X-1 District which covers most of the North Central Texas area from as far south at Weatherford and north to Allen. In total, there are 69 Lions Clubs in the area. He shares the award this year with Henry White from the Dallas South Lions Club.

"Fred has been at every single event sponsored by his club and by the District this year," Gleason said presenting the award. "He serves as the Curriculum Director of Lions University, as Zone Chairman and on the Global Leadership Team."

Conger accepted the award to a standing ovation, with his wife, Judy, by his side.

"This is a really special honor. The Lions Clubs mean a lot to me especially for the great work they do with their sight and tissue program. Helping children in need is really what it's all about," Conger said.

Fred joined the Coppell Lions Club in 1995 and served as club president in 2000-01 and again in 2011-12. He also served as Zone 2 Team Leader in 2010-11 and Zone 1 Team Leader for 2012-13. He was the instructor for the Presidents course at last year’s Lions University and he also lead last year’s Zone Team Leader training. This year he was awarded the International President’s Leadership Pin in addition to his Lion of the Year award.

Originally from Shelbyville, Indiana, Fred attended Purdue University, graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Most recently, he taught high school technology classes for four years and is currently finishing his seventh year teaching Pre-Engineering to eighth graders and Computer Applications to seventh graders in the Plano ISD. He and Judy, his wife of 46 years, have a son who is a Naval Lt. Commander stationed in Sasebo, Japan and a daughter who is an elementary school teacher who recently moved to New Jersey. He has four grandchildren.

Conger's award was the cornerstone to an overall great evening for the Coppell Lions as they were honored as District Club of The Year.
