The first meet of the cross country season opened under Friday night lights at two different locations for the Coppell Cowgirls and Cowboys.  The top 7 runners from both the girls’ and boys’ team travelled to Bear Branch Park in the Woodlands for the Friday Night Lights cross country meet on August 24.

Coppell proved to be the top Girls team with a score of 92. The girls’ 1st place finish was in the Varsity Girls A 2 mile run, a field with several state-ranked teams.  The cowgirls were led by junior Shelby Spoor, she finished 8th overall with a time of 12 minutes, 12.5 seconds.  Chloe Hassman (10th, 12:15.5), Natalie Fleming (22nd, 12:23.3), Maddie Hulcy (28th, 12:27.2) and Isabella Iseley (33rd, 12:32.9) were also point scorers for Coppell.

The Boys’ team took 8th place overall in the Boys Varsity A 4K run, a field of 140+ athletes.  Sophomore Evan Caswell led the cowboys, he finished 24th with a time of 13 minutes, 11.4 seconds.  Senior Marcos Bohn (25th, 13:12.5) also had a strong finish for Coppell.  Nathaniel Leach (44th, 13:31.1), Jackson Walker (49th, 13:36.5), and Santiago Escalante (51st, 13:37.2) rounded out the point scorers.

Head Coach Nick Benton is not reading too much into any of the results.  “This is the first meet of the season,” Benton said.  “There were lots of bright spots, as well as things to keep working on.”  He is looking forward to the entire team being back together for the Marcus I Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton on Saturday, September 1.

Results from the Friday Night Hawk Invite will be posted in a follow up article.
