Spirited Silver Spurs Hold Tryouts

By Shannon Wilkinson, BubbleLife Intern

The familiar chants and yells of Coppell High School students are just around the corner. With summer approaching and students beginning to try out for new activities, one very spirited group holds tryouts.

We hear the jingle of their spurs and can spot their cowboy hats a mile away every Friday during football season. The Silver Spurs are a spirited group of boys who are asked to pump up the crowd at games and pep rallies.

“I really loved being a Silver Spur this past football season, and I cannot wait to do it again for my senior year,” Silver Spur junior Gabino Garcia said.

Currently, sign ups for the 2013-14 Silver Spur team are underway. At each football game, the boys are required to do push-ups for the number of points our team scores. They are also required to pump up the crowd and get them excited.

“The Silver Spurs are so much fun to watch,” junior Sarah Robinson said. “They always get really into the games and make it so much more enjoyable for the crowd.”

During the 2012-13 school year, the Silver Spurs performed skits at the school pep rallies. Each skit had a mascot of the other team being taken away and “beat up” by our team. It got the crowd pumped and resembled Coppell’s undefeated regular season well.

“Preparing our skits this year was one of my favorite things to do – besides performing them of course,” Garcia said.

Along with the Silver Spurs, there is also the well-known ‘Plunger Boy.’ Plunger Boy’s story is quite funny in Coppell. The school’s huge rival, Southlake, once made fun of students, saying their parents were their plumbers. Coppell took it in a humorous way and created Plunger Boy.

“I always watch Plunger Boy during the games, especially since he wears a jumpsuit and carries the plunger,” Robinson said. “He is really hard to miss and makes games super interesting.”

Students are looking forward to next year’s peppy Silver Spurs with high hopes of amazing skits and even more energy.

“I hope next year’s Silver Spurs are just as awesome as they were this year, especially since it is my senior year,” Robinson said. “They never fail to impress us and it will be awesome to see what they have planned.”
