Election Day is not officially until May 11, but early birds can vote on the much-discussed $79.5 million Coppell ISD school bond package through the end of this week.

Back in February, the Coppell school board voted to add the motion to the May ballot after discussing the possibility of multiple propositions for each project included in the package.

If Coppell ISD parents approve the package, the district will start construction on a new elementary school in the Cypress Waters development of Coppell, costing $21 million. Additionally, the money would pay for improved technology, band, library, and classroom materials district-wide and a hefty $27.1 million overhaul of Coppell High School's field house, gym, and cafeteria.

The original project was brought to school board members by a Coppell Bond Committee, and veteran Board of Trustees member David Apple advocated strongly for the package to be approved by voters in one motion, as opposed to presenting Coppell residents with individual items.

He told the Coppell Gazette previously that responsibility fell on board members to "educate the voters as to why it is important to approve the package."

Provided that a majority of voters approve the board's recommendation, Coppell ISD voters will experience tax increases depending on their home value. For example, those with home values of $200,000 would see a $113.04 increase annually.
