On Tuesday, May 7, Denton Creek Elementary hosted a Communications Showcase to highlight one of their new school initiatives: DC University.
DC University is an enrichment program that incorporates student learning with student choice and applies real world experiences to the academic curriculum.
On Fridays students rotate through a series of workshops designed for engagement and learning. The students applied for classes from the following schools: School of Communication, School of Collaboration, School of Creativity, School of Critical Thinking and School of Community.
Some of the course offerings include: Digital Graphics, Communication & Speech Design, Creating an Online Newspaper, Radio Broadcasting, Digital Storytelling, Chess, Dominoes, Creative Reading & Writing, Dance, Service Learning, Interior Design, Lego Creations, Baylor Healthcare and Drama.
"This enriching experience has enabled our learners to study areas they want to learn more about and has given teachers the opportunity to teach what they are passionate about," said Bryan McLain, DCE Principal.
Denton Creek assumes something of a "collegiate feel," McLain said, on Fridays where learning comes alive as kids delve into subjects they might not otherwise be exposed to.
