Both Coppell Boys Lacrosse Teams Win Home Openers

On a night when it was difficult to focus on anything other than the weather, thanks to a cold front that caused temperatures to drop over 30 degrees in a couple of hours and included rain, heavy winds, and a wind chill below freezing, both of the Coppell High School Boys lacrosse teams performed well against cross town rival Plano West, and they each came away with a victory.

In the opening game, Coppell JV took on Plano West JV. The Cowboys started off with several shots on goal in the first quarter, as did Plano West, but only Plano West was able to get on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead to end the quarter. After that, Coppell got on a roll and scored the next three goals of the game to take a 3-1 lead into the halftime break. Strong play at the face off line by Sophomore Treat Judlin allowed the Cowboys to maintain possession and find quality shots on the offensive end.

Junior Daniel Gonzalas provided the firepower for the Coppell offense, scoring 2 goals and an assist on the game, along with Judlin, who scored 2 goals as well. Sophomore Jacob Dashner and Freshman Jack McAdams each tallied 1 goal each to round out the Cowboy scoring in the game.

On defense, Coppell was able to keep Plano West off balance and the Wolves were never able to get things going. Freshmen Jonah Popp and Harry Hook each came away with 2 ground balls and Junior Ryan Hunter grabbed 3 groundballs on the defensive end, and both Cowboy goaltenders, Matt Dean and Sam Taylor, were strong as they combined for over 10 saves in the game. Coppell scored the final two goals of the game to come away with the 6-3 win, running their season record to a perfect 3-0.

The weather got a bit colder as the two Varsity squads faced off in the second game of the night, which was evident in the slow start by both teams. Neither team even got a shot on cage until almost 8 minutes into the game, and the lone goal of the first quarter came when Junior Leo Swaldi found Sophomore Gavin Osteen for a goal with just over 2 minutes remaining in the quarter, giving Coppell a 1-0 lead at the first break.

But the second quarter was a different story, as Coppell once again dominated the face off stripe with Senior Reece Reynolds winning 11 of 15 draws in the game. The Cowboys held possession for the majority of the quarter and spread the wealth around, scoring the next 5 goals of the game from 5 different offensive players, allowing Coppell to take a 6-1 lead into halftime.

The Cowboy defense was able to keep the Plano West offense off balance for the entire game, with the only two goals of the second half for Plano West coming on man up situations following Coppell penalties. Sophomore Canon Peters led the efforts by the defense with 3 groundballs and 1 assist on the night, along with LSM Reid Robbins grabbing 2 groundballs and 3 forced turnovers and Remi Reynolds posting 3 ground balls and forcing 2 turnovers. Senior Midfielder Jack Liese made several strong plays and led multiple clears, while grabbing 3 groundballs and forcing 1 turnover. The Cowboys had a commanding 28-14 advantage in ground balls won in the game.

On offense, the Cowboys piled up a total of 10 goals and 8 assists on a night when the ball stayed at their offensive end most of the game. Two players posted hat tricks on the night—Junior Leo Swaldi (3 goals, 1 assist), and Gavin Osteen (3 goals, 1 assist). Junior Max Lamendola added 1 goal and 2 assists in the game while Sophomore Tyler Wendel had 2 assists. Senior two-way middies Ethan Bivens (1 goal, 4 GBs, 1 forced turnover) and Luke Bivens (1 assist, 5 GBs) contributed at both ends of the field as well.

The 10-3 final score allows the Cowboys Varsity unit to move their record to 2-1 on the season, and they will now prepare for more cold weather when they host Drippings Springs this coming Sunday at 2 PM at Lesley Field in Coppell.
