2018-2019 Coppell High School Athletic Awards

Congratulations to the 2018-2019 CHS Athletes of the Year and Fighting Heart Award Recipients!  These athletes represent the very best of our Coppell Cowboy and Cowgirl athletic programs, and we could not be more proud of them for the work they have put in this year:

Female Athlete of the Year - Rowan Hassman - Basketball/Cross Country/Track & Field - Senior

Rowan Hassman and her family moved to Coppell from Pennsylvania two years ago and immediately inserted herself into the Cowgirl athletic community.  She was the most consistent runner on the cross country team this season, helping to lead our girls cross country team to a 2018 State Championship. She is a 2-time area qualifier in the 800m, #3 CHS all time in the 800m, #4 CHS all time in the 1600m, and #5 CHS all time in cross country.  Rowan was also the Cowgirl basketball program’s MVP and top player this season. As a multi-sport athlete, she was a leader in three of our athletic programs with her incredible work ethic and tough competitive spirit. She is going to be competing in cross country/track & field at Bates College in the fall.

Female Co-Fighting Heart - Maddie Hulcy - Cross Country/Track & Field - Senior

Maddie Hulcy was a three-time state qualifier in cross country, with this past season culminating in a State Championship.  She was #10 all time 1600m, #6 all time 3200m, #4 CHS all time cross country. Maddie was also a three-year captain for the cross country team.  She broke her foot in May 2018, was out for 10 weeks, and then fought her way back to finish #5 at the state meet to help her team win the championship. She is going to continue her cross country/track & field athletic career at SMU in the fall.

Female Co-Fighting Heart - Hannah Francis - Wrestling - Sophomore

Hannah Francis was a part of the wrestling program her freshman year but did not wrestle in any matches that season.  In this sophomore season, after much hard work and dedication, she was a regional champion and a state qualifier. She scored points at the state wrestling meet to help her team earn a UIL trophy.

Male Athlete of the Year - Jonathan McGill - Football - Senior

Jonathan McGill was a four-year varsity starter and a two-year team captain for the Coppell Cowboy Football program.  In his time in the program, he earned an impressive list of accolades - 2019 district MVP, 2018 1st Team All-District Safety, 2017 Defensive Newcomer of the Year, 2019 Honorable Mention All-State Safety, 2019 Honorable Mention Academic All-State.  Jonathan is a Stanford football commit for this coming fall.

Male Fighting Heart - Preston Reed - Boys Soccer - Senior

Preston Reed battled injury this entire season and continued to be an impact player on his team.  He could only handle the pain for 10-15 minutes at a time but would play as often as his coaches needed him.  He never once complained about the injury or the pain, and he instead went to the trainer every morning to do what he could to be ready for training and games.  He was a remarkable example to his teammates of perseverance and mental toughness.
