Vedant led Cowboys to Win at Jesuit XC Classic He reset his personal record and placed 2nd overall in field of 207 athletes

The Jesuit XC Classic on Saturday, October 1 marked the end of the regular cross country season for Coppell.  The fast flat 5K course located at Prestonwood Polo and Country Club in Oak Point combined with beautiful cool autumn temperatures and good competition led to several personal records according to Head Coach Landon Wren.  The results in many ways reflected the team’s motto for the 2022 Cross Country Season, “Be Excellent Today”.  “BET” focused on athletes putting in their best effort each and every day.  By dedicating themselves to training hard, Coppell cross country athletes have achieved success on race day.            

The Cowboys’ won the 5A 6A Varsity Boys division.  Seniors Vedant Bhattacharyya (2nd, 15:12) and Andrew Mullen (3rd, 15:16.9) led the team pushing each other and setting personal records in the process.  Next in were Juniors Henry Henze (7th, 15:38), and Samarth Dubey (8th, 15:39) giving Coppell another pair of back to back finishes.  Kavin Chengavarayan (29th, 16:05) rounded out the team point scorers for Coppell.

The Cowgirls’ finished 11th overall in the 5A 6A Varsity Girls division.  Sophomore Mallory Sherrer led the girls; she finished in 14th place with a time of 19 minutes, 10.4 seconds.  Top five finishing teammates were Saanvi Gaddam (20:45), Elizabeth Grace Walker (20:55), Rachel Arrington, and Megan Peltier.  

The Coppell boys also clinched the win in the JV division.  Senior Asheer Jiwani won the JV division with a time of 16:30.  Cole Stehly (4th, 17:12), Rohan Shanbhag (5th, 17:13), Ansh Singal (6th, 17:16), and Jase Wilson (11th, 17:25) contributed to the first place team score. 

The Girls’ secured 6th overall in the JV Girls division.  Freshman Bess Williams led the girls with a 18th place finish in a time of 21:53.  Lucy Martinson (22:37), Ashlyn Wilbanks (23:12), Haneen Awad, and Alexa Turati scored team points for Coppell.  

“I am so proud of how hard these young men have worked this year.  The success we are having is a direct result of the work they’ve put in.  Just like with the boys, many of the girls had PRs.  I love seeing the girls have success because I know how hard they have been working as well,” said Head Coach Landon Wren.  Coach Wren is excited for the team to move into the championship season portion of the cross country season.  He notes that many athletes on both the Girls’ and Boys’ teams are running well at the right time.  Saturday, October 15 Coppell will compete in the District 6-6A Championship at North Lakes Park in Denton.  The District Championship is the conclusion of the JV Cross Country season.  The top three Varsity Cross Country teams, as well as, the top ten individuals in District 6 will qualify to compete in the Region 1-6A Championship in Lubbock.
