The Coppell Cowboys advance to the state cross country championship with a second place team finish at the Region I-6A Championship in Lubbock. The Region I cross county championship was held on the 5K course at Mae Simmons Park on Monday, October 24. Qualifying for the State Championship as a team is always challenging. Coppell boys have been running well all season proving that they were capable of qualifying for state. “We felt like we were one of the top 2 teams in this region,” Head Coach Landon Wren pointed out. “Leading up to the region championship we broke down the course and competition, as long as we didn’t try to do too much we were confident that we would qualify for state.” The top four teams from each region and the top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state championships.
The Coppell Cowboys qualified with a team score of 101 finishing runner- up to Southlake Carroll (25). Prosper (122) took third and El Paso Franklin (124) in fourth will also be competing at the State 6A Boys Cross Country Championship
Senior Andrew Mullen led Coppell with a strong 8th place finish clocking in at 15 minutes, 45.2 seconds. Senior Vedant Bhattacharyya was the next to cross the finish with a time of 16 minutes, 2 seconds. He finished 17th overall. Junior Henry Henze (21st, 16:08), junior Samarth Dubey (28th, 16:21) and senior Cameron Churchill-Dowd (59th, 16:35) rounded out the point scorers for Coppell. Seniors Samuel Martinson (16:45) and Kavin Chengavarayan (17:24) were the sixth and seventh runners for Coppell.
“The guys entered the race with confidence and their performance was a byproduct of that confidence. Almost every athlete on our team ran substantially faster than they did a little over a month ago on the same course,” said Coach Wren. “I’m extremely happy for the guys and can’t wait to see what they can do at the State Championship.” The 6A state cross country championship will be held at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Friday, November 4.
