With the ongoing unrest in Afghanistan and refugees arriving to the United States, it is important to provide life-changing humanitarian relief to those in need. Gateway Church, in collaboration with World Relief, will be collecting essential items for welcome kits for the Afghan refugees relocating to North Texas. The collections will be held on September 25–26 and October 2–3 at Gateway Church area locations.
In addition to dealing with housing and social resources challenges, refugees will face additional major hurdles. The welcome kits provide the basic household items that the Afghan refugees will need as they begin a new journey in the North Texas community. The items include essentials with six kit opportunities: hygiene, kitchen, household, bedroom, dining, and bathroom. By donating the welcome kits, this frees up World Relief finances to further help integrate Afghan families into the community.
There are two ways the community can get involved. First is a drop-off option, which allows people to purchase items and build their own kits. Then, deliver it to one of Gateway’s campuses in North Texas during weekend services on September 25–26 or October 2–3. People are also invited to ship their kits to one of the Gateway campuses, marked to the attention of “Welcome Kits for Afghans.” For a list of kits and items per kit, visit gatewaypeople.com. The second option is to give toward a kit, which is a cash donation that goes toward the creation of welcome kits. To give, visit gatewaypeople.com
Since August 1, World Relief had received 409 Afghans with Special Immigrant Visas. Thirty-nine of those were welcomed by the North Texas office, along with seven other refugees resettled during that period. An estimated 90+ Afghans will be coming to the area within the next three to six weeks. These numbers are in addition to the approximately 350 refugees/asylees already anticipated to arrive in North Texas over the next nine months. Serving Afghan arrivals into the United States for more than a decade, starting in the next few weeks, World Relief anticipates receiving a much larger number of Afghans arriving throughout their network—as many as 7,000 or even more just in the coming months. World Relief is one of nine resettlement agencies involved nationwide.
