Mullen Advances to State Championship as an Individual Qualifier

The Coppell Boys Cross Country team took on tough regional competition on Monday, October 25.  The Region 1 Championships were held on the 5K course at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.  Qualifying for the State 6A Championship as a team is always challenging in Region 1, the race is typically close and the outcome is often difficult to predict.  Only the top four teams and top ten individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the State Championship.

The Cowboys team championship season ended with a 7th place team finish at the Regional Championship.  Southlake Carroll, El Paso Eastwood, Plano West, and Prosper are the 2021 State 6A qualifying teams from Region 1.

Junior Andrew Mullen will move on to the UIL State Championship as an individual boys’ qualifier.  Andrew finished 7th overall with a time of 15 minutes, 54.8 seconds.  “Andrew ran an unbelievable race on an extremely difficult course,” commented Head Coach Landon Wren.

Vedant Bhattacharyya (56th, 17:04), Kavin Chengavarayan (60th, 17:08), Karthikeyan Parthipan (61st, 17:12), Samuel Martinson (76th, 17:20), Ahsan Habeeb (129th, 18:06), and Nicolas Martinez (136th, 18:14) competed for Coppell.  Alternates James Tan, Cameron Churchill-Dowd, Samarth Dubey, Cole Stehy, and Jeevan Janeev traveled with the Cowboys to Lubbock.

“We felt like we had a solid race plan and the guys did all that they could do to execute that plan.  However position wise, we weren’t exactly where we needed to be early in the race, and that forced us to play catch up the rest of the race,” said Coach Wren.  “I want to give credit to the other schools.  Region 1 is tough and 6 schools ran a little better than us today.  We are disappointed that we didn’t qualify for state as a team, but it wasn’t because of lack of effort.”

The Cowboys are excited for Andrew Mullen.  According to Coach Wren, “Andrew had a goal at the beginning of the season to get back to the State Championship and he accomplished that goal today.”  Coppell Cross Country has been represented at the State Championship consecutively since the 2016 season.  Andrew Mullen will carry the tradition this season.  The UIL State Championships will be held at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Saturday, November 6.
