High School Students Explore Science Behind Cancer

New Tech High at Coppell Learners Explore the Science Behind Cancer in Connection to Relay For Life

By Silvia Petrova and Caroline Prichard

Throughout the month of March, the freshman learners of New Tech High @ Coppell studied cancer as they worked on a project in their Biotech Ethics class, where they were to produce websites along with embedded personal videos, to serve as publicity for Relay For Life around the community of Coppell.  In a gallery-style presentation, groups were excited to showcase their final products to outside evaluators, including those who serve on the Relay committee.  Many referred to this project as eye opening experience in allowing the learners to truly dive into the content, thus gaining a better understanding of cancer.

Relay for Life is an all-night event that consists of teams camping out, where everyone is encouraged to walk the relay track and participate in the festivities, which are available to family and friends of all ages.  Anyone can start a team or donate to a participant online, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society to aid in cancer education, prevention, and research.

The 2012 Relay For Life of Coppell will take place on April 28-29, from 5:00 in the evening to 7:00am, and for details and dates on your community’s event, in addition to further information on opportunities on ways to participate in Relay For Life, starting/joining a team, or making a donation, visit the Relay for Life website at www.relayforlifecoppell.com.
