Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our 6th Six Weeks Celebration!  Below are some of our victories this past six weeks.

Our 6th Six Weeks Genius Award Recipients:  Our genius awards are given to learners who have shown excellent displays of the life principles we strive for here at Turning Point. Abbigale Williams is our first Genius Award recipient for the six weeks. Non-native Texans sometimes say, “I wasn’t born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could”. I don’t know if Abbi has this feeling quite yet, but she is worthy of the slogan and lives up to the spirit and hard work of a native Texan. As one of the youngest learners Turning Point has ever accepted, we wondered how she would fair in our high expectations, accelerated program. On her first day here, she was witness to a swarm of elementary learners coming to experience our VP@C learner created museum exhibits. Not to worry! She took this challenge and the challenge of her course work to complete lesson after lesson, unit after unit and course after course. She was flourishing. In the beginning, it was noted that during lunches, Abbi would often sit off to the side reading a book. As she continued to thrive, she began to make friends, succeed and mature to become an important asset as a member of our campus community. She kept her love of reading and added Victory Place @ Coppell staff and learners as a part of her educational life showing the life principles of flexibility and friendship. Here are a few ways she contributes to our campus community. We count on Abbi to teach the learner concierges the role in coordinating our guest speakers. We count on her to update the word, life principle and quote of the week. We count on her to manage our weekly job board for learners, and we count on Abbi to help organize our library. With these contributions, she uses the life principle of integrity. These are just a sampling of the ways Abbi leads by example using her quiet, reserved demeanor and the life principle of sincerity. Abbi thank you for sharing your genius.

This next Genius Award recipient goes to Lauren Reimers. Some people are natural born leaders with a heart to serve, help and a willingness to step up any time someone is in need.  From early on as a learner at VP@C, she was not shy about speaking up or helping out and continued to show development with a service minded attitude. Lauren has shown tremendous growth as a student, young adult and member of a community here at Victory Place.  Her desire to helps others is evident by not only being the first one willing to assist teachers and other learners but by also being one of the first students to reach out to new learners and show them ropes.  She models the life principle of citizenship in other volunteer endeavors outside of campus and shares her genius of humanitarianism with others by both those she serves.  Lauren continues to overcome challenges and display the life principle of resiliency.  Her continued push to achieve academic success is an inspiration and motivator to others around her, both peers and staff.  Thank you, Lauren for coming to school with a determined attitude and a desire to help and serve others you are an integral part of our VP@C community.

Congratulations to the VP@C Team Member of the 6th Six Weeks:  Mrs. Ron-Marie Johnson keeps this building running smoothly! She goes above and beyond the call of any Administrator that we have ever worked with. The other members on our campus can learn plenty from Mrs. Johnson, as her intelligence about education and life in general is almost uncanny! Her mindset is always on what's best for our learners and how can we improve as a team. She's funny, open to suggestions, and the ultimate professional. Mrs. Johnson is a true genius! As the leader of VP@C, Mrs. Johnson reigns supreme. She is always looking for ways to encourage learners and staff and to make VP@C better. Mrs. Johnson devotes countless hours of her time to accomplish this. She worked tirelessly with Great Expectations, her learners and staff for VP@C to be a Great Expectations Model School. She continually promotes VP@C with our school leaders and community, as well other districts in the area and across the state. Mrs. Johnson is more than an awesome team member, she is our AWESOME TEAM LEADER. Mrs. Johnson has served Coppell ISD for 25 years. She has been our fearless leader in setting high expectations for our campus. She keeps us focused on our vision. No matter how busy Mrs. Johnson is (and believe me, she is busy) she will always stop to help and answer questions for learners, parents, and staff. She is one of our best problem solvers and ensures that no matter what decision needs to be made, we are to keep the best interest of our learners as our top priority. VP@C team members can learn perseverance and fortitude from Mrs. Johnson. She never gives up when things get crazy during the school year and cheers on our successes no matter how big or small. Mrs. Johnson thank you for being GENIUS!

Congratulations to our CISD GEM- Marco Rodriguez! Mr. Rodriguez has a passion for literacy and works daily to ensure that our learners are exposed to a variety of genres and literary texts. He has implemented sustained silent reading a daily commitment in both programs, he works very closely with the daily lexicon practice, and has engaged learners in providing and explaining quotes from literary texts. Most recently, to increase the Victory Place @ Coppell library, Mr. Rodriguez wrote and received a Coppell ISD Foundation Grant to purchase additional classroom texts based on the learners’ feedback, interests, and social issues that are pertinent to our learners. When the texts arrived, I watched a buzz of excitement from the learners as they were involved in the sharing, collaboration and sorting of the new books. The learners were sharing connections between different genres and their own experiences, giving summaries of books that learners hadn't read, and creating their own categories to create the expanded classroom library. Mr. Rodriguez’s thoughtful planning lead to an organized and productive learning opportunity. Some learners stated that they hadn't read a book in a few months or had ever read a book all the way through, but now they are excited to share with others about their reading and are taking books home. To motivate and inspire is a big task with some of our learners that don't see relevance in school. This authentic and constructivist literacy project has allowed our learners to regain and/or find a new passion for reading. Mr. Rodriguez, thank you for being a Genius!
