Relay For Life of Coppell Earns Five Star Relay Status

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Coppell achieved 5 Star Relay status in 2011!

“I am so excited about our 5 Star season,” said Debbie Russell-Chillag, event chair for the 2012 Relay For Life of Coppell. “The last year was amazing, and I know that 2012 will be another successful year.”

The 2011 event was led by Claudia Herman, Co-chairman Chris Herman, and a committee of more than 25 people.

The objective of the Five Star Relay Challenge is to recognize the outstanding events within the American Cancer Society’s High Plains Division — Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Hawaii and Guam. The Five Stars include Advocacy, Fight Back, Fundraising, Standards and Survivorship. The Five Star Relay Challenge is designed to strengthen the core of Relay in each community. Events that achieve Five Star status see growth in income and participation.

The April 30, 2011, event grossed $87,300 and netted $78,400. Team money accounted for $82,000 of the total.

In 2011, 72 survivors joined the teams in raising money for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Of that, 48 survivors joined a Relay For Life team and had the support of that team behind them throughout the event.

The top four fundraising teams for the 2011 Relay For Life were the City of Coppell, Greg’s Waterside Warriors, Team HCA and the CHS Public Service Academy.

Baylor Medical Center at Irving was the top sponsor.

Relay For Life is a true team effort as survivors and caregivers are celebrated and teams step up to celebrate, remember and fight back. You don't have to be a runner. Team members just lace up their favorite walking shoes and take turns walking the track at Wagon Wheel Park for 12 hours. Relay For Life signifies that cancer never sleeps, so neither should we.

The 2012 Relay For Life Coppell is coming up on Saturday, April 28-29 at Wagon Wheel Park. 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of Relay For Life in Coppell. The community and the event have raised $904,769 since 2003.  The goal for the event is to raise at least $95,000 and reach the $1 million milestone.
