Ten Boy Scout troops from Coppell and Irving welcomed 88 scouts into their membership at the annual Five Trails District Webelos to Scout Crossover ceremony on March 11 at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell. Members of the Satank Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, which is a national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America, presided over the ceremony.

Coppell Troop 840 welcomed 25 scouts at the ceremony. These scouts were quickly immersed into the troop, attending their first troop meeting on March 21 and their first campout the weekend of March 24. Boy Scout youth leaders, known as Troop Guides, will work with the new scouts on rank advancement and campout preparation. 

Before determining which troop to join, the Webelos attended Boy Scout troop meetings and participated with troops at the annual Show 'n Do in January. In addition to seeing how each troop sets up camp, the scouts were able to swing axes in an axe yard, launch model rockets, cross a monkey bridge made by Boy Scouts, and enjoy homemade pizza. The Webelos were also given an opportunity to camp out with the Boy Scout troops.

Webelos select the Boy Scout troop they want to join based on a variety of reasons. Some scouts joined Troop 840 as their older brothers had done.Others chose troops based on camping and high adventure trips, troop activity level, community service, and when troop meetings are held. Coppell has five Boy Scout troops with meetings being held on different nights of the week. 

Many scouts are looking forward to the Boy Scout experience, including newfound freedom and independence, while others are looking forward to learning how to cook on campouts, participating in high adventure camps, and being involved in Knotmasters, a Troop 840 class where scouts can learn over 40 types of knots, splices, and lashings that they will use throughout their scouting career.

Troop 840 is a boy-led troop, which means that the scouts are responsible for planning and running the meetings and camping programs, including meal planning and preparation. Boys learn to work with others, react to and handle situations, establish goals, learn leadership skills, become self-sufficient, and deal with adversity in a safe environment.

Troop 840currently has 143 registered Boy Scouts and meets weekly at Valley Ranch Baptist Church.
