Bullying has recently come to light as a major problem in schools across the country. As kids are sometimes hesitant to go to their parents when they’re being bullied, parents are encouraged to learn and recognize the signs of bullying.

Bullying can have serious effects on both the one being bullied and the one that is bullying. Bullied kids have a higher chance of doing poorly in school, low self-esteem, depression and potential to violence. Bullies are also likely to do poorly in school, smoke and drink and commit crimes in the future.

Parents should watch for these major signs of bullying in their children:

  • Withdrawal
  • Loss of friends
  • Drop in grades
  • Loss of interest in activities that he or she previously enjoyed
  • Torn clothing
  • Bruises
  • Need for extra money or supplies

Parents can play a very important role in preventing or stopping bullying. The most important thing that parents can do is take bullying seriously. Parents should put an immediate stop to any bullying they see, even if their child is the one being the bully.

If a child says they are being bullied at school, parents should take it seriously. However, don’t immediately confront the bully’s parents. Instead, talk to the student’s teacher and the principal. The child should be encouraged to talk things out with the bully and reminded not to use violence to get “revenge” on the bully.

Finally, parents should always act as positive role models for their children. Parents shouldn’t bully others in front of their children. If a child sees his or her parents hit, ridicule or gossip about someone else, they are more likely to do so themselves.
