Facing likely the best field of the 2012 campaign until the regional finals, the Coppell Cross Country teams held their own at the Marcus 1 meet, held at North Lake Park in Denton.

On the girls side, the meet was stacked with likely three of the top-five 5A teams in the state in addition to last year’s state champion 4A team in Highland Park. Paced by seniors Jenna Hernandez (19:41) and Katie Sandfort (19:44), the girls brought home a seventh place finish in their first effort at the new UIL distance of 3.1 miles for girls.

The boys continued their season of improvement by moving from 14th place last year to a top-10 finish this year. In finishing ninth, the boys overcame a pile-up of runners at the start, which claimed four of the seven athletes on Coppell’s varsity squad. Both the team (ninth) and lead runner Carson Vickroy (13th in 16:14) placed higher than any Coppell boys team or athlete since at least 2007.

The highest team finishes of the weekend were shared by the JV teams on both the boys and girls’ sides, as each team finished fourth overall.  The Coppell JV Girls placed five runners between 12th and 26th, led by Junior Gabrielle Olivas.  The boys team of Tyler Whiting, Josh Thomas, George Fairchild, Justin Armenta, Mikey Gonzalez, Mark Jeska, and Jay Harrison all came in in the top-50 of the 375 person race.

The team returns to the metroplex to compete in the Flower Mound Invitationals in Bakersfield Park on September 15.
