It was a great week to be at the Coppell High School Distance Camp for incoming 7th-9th grades.  Coach Nick Benton, along with Troy Briscoe, Tyler Briscoe, Ashley Scrivner, and Darby Shepard introduced 32 athletes to the Coppell Distance Program.

Training to run began bright and early each day at 7:00 am.  Athletes started the morning warming up with the high school team and running group specific mileage.  The focus of camp was to teach upcoming athletes about pace per mile, critical threshold, maintaining a log book, eating better, using a running watch, drinking enough water, getting 7-8 hours of sleep, stretching, and perseverance.  Special guest speakers during the week included Laura Taylor (Trinity University runner), Greg Vasquez (Park University runner), Carson Vickroy (University of Kansas runner), and Sara Sims (nutrition).

At the end of camp, group leaders had introduced the young athletes to a supportive community of youth that love to run.  For the incoming freshman distance camp was an ideal way to transition into the Coppell High School Cross Country team.  Younger athletes will also have an opportunity to continue running.  The Coppell Stampede, a running club for boys and girls in 5th-8th grade begins June 12.  For more information contact Nick Benton at nickdbenton@gmail.com or Sara Sims at sims.sj@att.net
