Pumpkins were racing in Chaucer Estates

Chaucer Estates is a well established neighborhood south of the Coppell Town Center.  It is best known for its beautiful trees and pond, as well as, its close proximity to schools, city services, and  local businesses.  However, Chaucer Estates’ best kept secret is its annual pumpkin race and costume contest on October 31st .  The annual event was held last Saturday night with over hundred residents and friends in attendance.  Resident, Michelle Cochran, was the founder of the pumpkin race in 2007.  She had attended the world renown Manhattan Beach, California pumpkin race and thought the hills in Chaucer would be the perfect place to start an annual tradition.  The event took off and is in its 9th year.

This year’s race had eight entries.  Pumpkins must comply with the established rules like two independent axles.  15 heats were run to name a winner.  The Schwartz family of Chaucer Estates won first place with their minion pumpkin.   2nd place went to the Warner family, and 3rd place to Hailey and Hannah Helterbran.  In addition to the race, pumpkins are decorated and judged for Scariest, Most Creative and Funniest.  This year’s winners were the Slaton family’s clown pumpkin for Scariest, Sophia Priest’s pumpkin for Funniest, and the Randall family’s pumpkin called Anger for Most Creative.

A costume parade and contest is also held after the pumpkin race.  Winners of the costume contest were Most Original Costume, Reed Lucas; Scariest Costume, Eric Ghai; and a tie for Cutest Costume, Allison Stocco and Dillon Slaton.  The Chaucer Estates 10th Annual Pumpkin Race and Costume Contest is scheduled for October 31, 2016.
