Ahmed Mohamed’s story has been under the national spotlight for the past few weeks as details surrounding his suspension for making a homemade clock reached the public eye. While most stories have focused on how Islamophobia impacted Ahmed specifically, they neglect to cover the true scope of this problem within Dallas schools. Thom Browne III of the Dallas Morning News explains that discrimination and segregation of minorities is prevalent in school districts such as Highland Park and Dallas ISD. While Ahmed was brave enough to speak out against this discrimination, many students’ struggles go unnoticed and unaddressed. We as a community have a responsibility to push for reform within our schooling system to ensure this systematic discrimination doesn’t continue to hinder the growth of our students.
