The Cowboys, playing in their second game of the season, traveled across town Friday night to take on the Allen Eagles. The Eagles entered the game with a 2-1 record, with their only loss coming to defending state champion Dallas Jesuit.

Allen got off to a fast start as they controlled possessions and held the ball on their offensive end of the field for much of the first 10 minutes of the game. Allen scored four goals over that time period to force Coppell to take a time out and reset things early. Coppell finally got on the scoreboard when Zach Bartolacci found fellow Senior Reese Walker for a goal with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. Coppell then scored 3 more times over the next two minutes on unassisted goals by Brandon Point, Zach Eckley, and Walker Cain, making it a 4-4 tie game at the end of the first quarter.

The defenses improved in the 2nd quarter, as the teams continued the back and forth scoring with Allen taking a 7-5 lead into halftime. Zach Eckley scooped up a groundball near midfield then sprinted to the crease to score Coppell’s only goal of the quarter.

The scoring picked back up again in the 3rd quarter, led by Allen’s top scorers on the game, attackman Parker Schubert and middie Clay Cutler, one of whom seemed to figure in with a goal or an assist on almost all Allen’s scores in the game. Coppell tried to keep pace in the quarter, led by Reese Walker adding 1 goal and 2 assists in the 3rd, for a total of 2 goals and 2 assists on the game.

As Allen carried their 13-9 lead into the final quarter, they adjusted into more of a slowdown offense, settling for longer possessions and several defensive stops by Coppell. But turnovers and short possessions by the Cowboys prevented them from cutting into the lead, and the Eagles took the win with a 15-10 final score.

The two JV teams faced off in the late game, and Coppell JV was able to ride an effective scoring attack and timely defense to a 9-7 win in their first official game of the season.

Coppell will host Highland Park Varsity and JV for their next set of games this Friday, February 23, at Lesley Field in Coppell. The JV game starts at 6 PM ,and the Varsity teams will square off at 7:30 PM.
