Coppell Boys Lacrosse Junior Varsity team was in action this past weekend at the Jesuit Lacrosse Invitational here in Dallas. This was not only the first games of the year for the Junior Varsity team, but the first high school lacrosse action for many of the incoming Freshman players, and their first chance to experience the increased speed of the game and size of the players.
The Cowboys JV team went 2-1-1 on the weekend, and showed the type of depth that Coppell is developing throughout the program. They notched impressive wins over Flower Mound JV and Vandergrift JV, and battled to a 4-4 ties against Dripping Springs JV. Their only loss came in the final contest against host team Jesuit Dallas JV.
The offense got going early and often against Flower Mound, as the Cowboy offense kept the ball at their end most of the game and fired plenty of shots on goal. Sophomore Jacob Dashner led the team with 5 goals, followed my Freshman Jack McAdams, Sophomore Treat Judlin, and Freshman Carson Point with two goals each. Sophomore Aiden Strickland and Freshman Alex Haydek each scored once, and Sophomore Andrew Sullivan led the team with 2 assists and 4 ground balls won.
Treat Judlin was strong at the face off stripe, winning over 80% of the draws on the game, and Harrison Hood was over 75% on the game.
The defense was strong as Freshman goalie Sam Taylor had 4 saves on 6 shots in his half of play, and the defense of Jonah Popp, Davis Dodd, Ryan O’Toole, and Ryan Hunter minimized the number of scoring opportunities by Flower Mound, allowing Coppell to come away with a 15-5 win.
The Saturday afternoon game against Vandergrift was a much closer game, where the defense was asked to provide more support, and they definitely answered the call. In goal, Junior Matt Dean and Freshman Sam Taylor combined for a 60% save percentage, holding Vandergrift to just 2 goals in the game. Junior Ryan O’Toole grabbed 2 ground balls, and Sophomore middie Bain Carter grabbed 3 ground balls and had 1 assist in limited minutes.
On Offense, the Cowboys had to be more patient and work harder for their chances, getting 3 assisted goals and 3 unassisted. Jack McAdams opened the scoring on a feed from Andrew Sullivan, who then scored the next goal on a nice pass by Bain Carter. Carson Point, Treat Judlin, and Jack McAdams followed that up with an unassisted goals, and Jacob Dashner found Judlin for the final score of the game, and a 6-2 win.
The entire Coppell High School team will now go back to preparing for their first league games of the season, which will be February 13thin McKinney.
