Coppell Boys Varsity Lacrosse had a successful week, gaining their first district win of the season over Flower Mound High School on Wednesday, and then topped St. Rita’s High School (from Chicago-area) on Saturday.

The mid-week game with Flower Mound was a close match, which featured lots of fast-paced play and scoring in the first half, then things slowed down a bit for both sides, and the defenses took over in the second half. The Cowboys attack unit was extremely productive in the game, with starters Walker Cain, Zach Bartolacci, and Spencer Haddock combining to score 8 goals and add 6 assists, including 3 goals each for both Cain and Bartolacci. Coppell clung to a small lead at halftime of 9-7.

On the defensive end, the Cowboys settled down in the second half, led by Senior goalie Cooper McAden, who had 5 saves and only 2 goals allowed. Senior Midfielders Tommy Donaldson (3 groundballs, 2 forced turnovers) and Conner Choate (2 groundballs and 1 forced turnover) helped slow down the Flower Mound offense, and Coppell walked away with a 12-9 victory, and evened their district record at 1-1. The majority of Flower Mound’s offense was supplied by Senior Cole Watson (committed to play college lacrosse at Utah University), who scored 4 goals in the game.

On Saturday, Coppell Varsity played host to St. Rita’s of Chicago, who travelled to the Metroplex last week to play several Dallas-area teams. Coppell looked sharp right out of the gate on both offense and defense, and was able to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead after one quarter of play and continued that efficiency on the way to a 7-0 halftime lead. Junior Harper DeLoach played big in his first start of the year, leading the defense in ground balls and forced turnovers, and Freshman goalie Hayden MacArthur held St. Rita’s scoreless in the first half while making 3 saves and grabbing a ground ball. Ripken and Reese Reynolds continued to provide Coppell with a huge advantage in possessions at the face off line as well.

The top contributors on offense were Seniors Spencer Haddock (3 goals, 3 assists), Ripken Reynolds (3 goals, 1 assist), and Ben Goyne (1 goal, 2 assists). Even the defensive unit got in on the scoring with LSM Conner Choate scoring 2 goals and short-stick middie Joe Fex notching 1 goal and 1 assist. The Cowboys finished up with a 16-3 win, and ran their overall season record to 8 wins and 2 losses. The most unique stat line of the game goes to Senior midfielder Tommy Donaldson, who had 1 assist, 1 goal dis-allowed due to a sudden timeout call, and 2 broken sticks in the game.

The Cowboys will now spend the week getting ready for a big district battle with Plano West at 7:30 PM on Friday night, here at Lesley Field in Coppell. The Boys JV lacrosse teams from each school will play at 6 PM that same night and location.
