Coppell Boys Lacrosse Clears First Hurdle, Beats Keller Varsity Last Thursday

The Coppell Boys Lacrosse team entered their game last Thursday night against Keller with an 8-7 record on the season and needing to win all three of their remaining games to qualify for the playoffs.

Coppell started the scoring quickly as Ripken Reynolds won the opening face off and immediately found Spencer Haddock who shot and scored. The offenses took some time to get going, as Keller scored on an errant pass that found its way to the crease attackman for a goal, and Coppell’s Reese Walker made an athletic steal and score from the Keller goalie to give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead to end the 1st quarter.

Coppell got on a run after that, stretching their lead to 7-2 at halftime. Junior Reese Walker totaled an impressive 6 goals and 1 assist, to go with 3 forced turnovers, and Senior Spencer Haddock finished with 3 goals on the night.  Senior Ben Goyne added 1 goal and 3 assists, while Senior Ripken Reynolds scored 2 goals, 1 assist, and won over 80% of his face-offs for the game.

The defense was solid all game long, keeping Keller to only 8 shots on cage. For Coppell, Connor Choate forced 4 turnovers, followed by Ryan Gordon’s 3 forced turnovers and 3 ground balls, and Harper DeLoach grabbed 4 ground balls. The defense also forced seven failed clears by Keller on the night, making it difficult for them to mount any sort consistent offensive threat.

The Cowboys came away with an impressive 15-4 final score and a win, meaning they are still in the hunt for one of the final playoff spots in the Division 1 North District. Next up for Coppell will be neighboring rival Southlake High School. The two teams will square off at noon on Saturday, April 22, at Dragon Stadium, which is a critical game for both teams to stay alive for a playoff spot.
