The Coppell JV Boys were able to hold on for a close win over Plano West JV last Friday, but ended up with their first loss of the season Tuesday night at the hands of Highland Park.  Both games were decided by a single goal and saw the momentum swing throughout the matches.

The game against Plano West last week saw Coppell strike first on an unassisted goal by Walker Cain, but Plano equalized in the 2nd quarter to tie things 1-1 at halftime. Peyton Barron provided the bulk of the offense in the 3rd quarter, scoring 2 unassisted goals, as Coppell stretched the lead to 4-2 entering the final quarter.

Plano West then scored three unanswered goals in the 4th quarter and took a 5-4 lead with just 3:37 remaining in the game. That is when Junior Nick Thurmond stepped up and scored two clutch goals on outside shots (assists by Ethan Bivens and Jack Liese, respectively), giving Coppell a come-from-behind win late in the game.

Ethan Bivens led the defensive efforts with 2 forced turnovers and 3 ground balls, and the goalies combined for 8 saves on the game, including a big save by Lee Martin on a close-in shot late in the game.

On Tuesday night, the JV Boys traveled to face traditional power program Highland Park, and things started off well for the Cowboys. Luke Bivens got the Cowboy offense going with an unassisted goal, and later in the half Daniel Gonzalez found Peyton Barron (2 goals on the game) for a score and a 3-1 lead at halftime. Reid Robbins led the defensive unit with 4 forced turnovers and 2 ground balls, along with Lars Mazurek’s 1 forced turnover and 2 groundballs. Reese Reynolds was strong at the faceoff line, winning 9 of 13.

But Highland Park got their offense going in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Cowboys 3-1 in the final frame, which was enough to give the Scots the 5-4 win, and saddle Coppell with its first loss of the season. Coppell JV will face another stiff test on Friday night when they take on Dallas Jesuit Prep at Lesley Field at 6 PM, followed by the varsity teams at 7:30 PM. Please come out and support the Cowboys lacrosse program.
