The Cowboys broke out the offensive firepower in their season opener to defeat Seven Lakes High School (Katy, TX) by a final score of 12 to 9 on Saturday afternoon. Seven Lakes took an early lead to end the first quarter, led by their top scorer on the day, Caleb Cole. But Coppell surged back, powered by Junior attackmen Zach Bartolacci (3 goals, 2 assists on the day) and Reese Walker (3 goals, 1 assist on the day). Then Senior midfielder Ben Goyne (2 goals, 1 assist on the day) got involved in the scoring with an unassisted goal and an assist to Sophomore Walker Cain, giving Coppell a 7 to 5 lead at halftime.

The scoring continued for Coppell in the second half, led by Senior Spencer Haddock (2 goals, 1 assist on the day, plus a tough-to-explain "no goal"), and was punctuated by a laser shot from 15 yards out from Reese Walker to finish the scoring for the Cowboys.

The Reynolds brothers (Senior Ripken and Sophomore Reece) dominated the face-off spot for Coppell, winning over 75% of the draws and giving Coppell a huge advantage in offensive possessions all day. Ripken also added 1 goal and 1 assist in the game.

The Cowboy defense settled down and applied the pressure, forcing over 14 turnovers, and provided the team a sizable advantage in groundballs, winning 20 grounders to only 10 won by Seven Lakes (unofficial count).  Seniors Dylan Thompson and Ryan Gordon each had two critical take aways to stop some late game scoring threats by Seven Lakes. Both goalies were solid, posting 50% save percentages on the day. Freshman Hayden MacArthur had 5 stops in the first half and Senior Cooper McAden saved 4 shots in the second half.

Head Coach Jeff Roberts and staff will now turn their attention towards their next game, when they will travel to play Plano East HS at Jack Carter (Central Grass Field) this Friday, February 17, at 8 PM. Please come out and cheer on your undefeated Cowboys.
