National Night Out promotes neighborhood safety

The city of Coppell is focusing on promoting safety and eliminating crime in its neighborhoods.

The city will be participating in the 20th annual National Night Out program to promote neighborhood safety on Oct. 4.

National Night Out is a national program that has the goals of heightening crime prevention awareness, strengthening neighborhood spirit, and establishing better police-community partnerships, according to the city of Coppell website.

On the evening of the event, neighborhoods are encouraged to host block parties, so residents can meet with members of the police, fire department and city council in a social setting. The block parties are encouraged to have cookouts, ice cream socials, bounce houses and live bands.

Two other citywide events also will be hosted in support of National Night Out.

A free swim party will be hosted for all block captains and their families from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Coppell Aquatic Center. The Coppell Police Department is sponsoring the party and will provide block captains with t-shirts, balloons and door hangers at the event.

Also, a NNO Golf Tournament will be hosted to unite police officers, city leaders, business owners and members of the community on Sept. 16 at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound. Participants will receive green fees, a cart, range balls, lunch and a chance to win door prizes for $80 per person.
